The Beauty and Versatility of Annuals

What can we plant in our gardens this spring that will provide plenty of flowers and foliage to fill our garden beds and other flower containers this summer? Of course, the answer is annuals. Annuals happen to be the most effective ways to add bright, colorful accents to any garden or patio. This is especially so during our warmer months as winter gives way to spring and then summer. Though they typically live only for the season, annuals bring beauty and mark a distinct change of seasons in both the residential and commercial landscape.

They may be used alone or combined with perennials or shrubs to fill in gaps or enhance their beauty. Annual flowers bring to life the front entry of a home or business, helping to create light and excitement to shrub borders or accent an existing water feature or a relaxing area in the yard. Whatever the purpose, annual flowers bring beauty and sophistication to any home or business. The range of colors and foliage provides a positive image to a home or commercial building suggesting attention to detail and refinement.

While generally easier to grow than perennials, annuals do require some care. They can grow quickly and bloom for a long period of time whether in the ground or in pots. Being successful with annuals takes knowledge and experience in choosing the right color combinations, sun conditions, proper bed preparation, fertilization, irrigation, drainage as well as maintenance. This is where your consultant can help you as they are trained in these areas and will help maximize your investment while ensuring you have beautiful flowers all season.

As our growing season is long here in the Dallas and Fort Worth area, there are many varieties that you can enjoy throughout the spring all the way till the end summer. A short list of annuals best suited for our area includes: blue daze, angelonia, coleus, moss rose, purslane, Hibiscus, pentas, sweet potato vine, scaevola, celosia, gazanias, zinnias and marigolds for sunny areas. Begonias, impatiens, and caladiums work well in shadier places in your garden. Your consultant can help you choose the right selections and placement for your home or business. Whatever your need may be, there is an annual available to fill it and provide beauty and enjoyment all season.
